Brooks

Brooks Wood Akins

Brooks was born at 8:11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 16th. He had a few respiratory problems and was admitted to the NICU immediately. He had numerous tests and x-rays of his lungs, kidney function, and stomach. Luckily, the diagnosis was that he just needed some help to adjust to the world outside the womb. Praise the Lord! That was an extreme emotional roller coaster for Mom and Dad...not to mention the hormones I had going anyway!
I am feeling much better. During Sam's C-Section I lost a little more blood than they typically like to see so they were wanted to do a blood transfusion on me. Jon and I didn't feel comfortable with that so we decided that being a little more tired for another month was better than they worst case scenario for a blood transfusion.
Sam is really doing great at being a big brother! He just giggles when he is around Brooks and loved to shake his hand and feel his little toes.
I don't know what I would do without my amazing husband either! He has been the diaper changing champion and taken care of all the housework. It has been so great to have him around these past two weeks. He puts in a lot of hours at his job so I feel extremely spoiled seeing him this much...it's going to be hard on Sam when Dad isn't around to wrestle all day long!
Here are a few pics of our latest addition!

D-Day

Tomorrow is the day! Jon and I are very excited...and nervous about meeting baby boy #2! Still trying to decide on a name...you know, we have lots of time :) We asked Sam tonight what he wanted to name his little brother and he said, "Frosty the Snowman" gotta love it!

We just finished off a tub of cookie dough (well, mostly me) as my last hoorah before lose baby weight boot camp kicks into gear!

We will try to have pictures and an update soon with our latest addition!

New Favorite Hiding Spot

This one can be trouble because the other day I REALLY couldn't find him!!! Little stinker!

Who knew brushing our teeth could be so much fun?!?

Thanksgiving

This year Jon and I decided to host Thanksgiving at our house. I have always wanted to have a big family holiday gathering and since we just moved to a new house we thought this would be the perfect time. Of course, I didn't really expect to be nine months pregnant at the time.
We had a minor problem that involved my mom and a cup of corn starch...see pic below. Other than that, it was a blast!
This is what happens when you eat a whole turkey

This is Jon explaining the rules to the card tournament...he takes it very seriously

Mom + corn starch = not good

Huey Lewis...takin' it back old school style

Dr. Hyland Teething Tablets saved my life...

Anyone else up for drugging their children? Sam and I had an extremely rough night and day two days ago. Literally, the child slept 3 hours total out of a 24 hour period. I thought for sure he had an ear infection or something...took him to the doctor...healthy as a horse!
So...I really needed some sleep and got some wonderful advice from a good friend and decided a little sedative never hurt anyone :)
Sam slept ALL night long and took a 3 1/2 hour nap today as well! Hallelujah! Much needed sleep for everyone! He is also much more pleasant and joyful to be around!
Isn't this an ornery face???

Halloween Party

We had a Halloween Party last Friday night at our house...unfortunately, I was too tired by the time everyone got there to snap lots of pics. I am hopefully going to get some from friends soon! Jon borrowed a fire pit from our neighbors and all the girls were so gracious to bring extraordinary side dishes and desserts that Jon and I have still been trying to finish off the leftovers!
Thank you again Mandy Froehlich for the 24 cupcakes :) You can pick up your empty dishes whenever you like...my will power is fading quickly
Sam had a blast and all the kids looked so cute in costumes! Hopefully, I can post more pics later, but this is what we have so far!
Sam was, of course, a cowboy. Sam is a cowboy everyday. Sam doesn't like to wear clothes with his cowboy hat. Oh, and he figured out a few weeks ago how to take his diaper off and run like mad from me. And I'm having another baby in 6 weeks??? Really???

Work Weekend

Thanks to Uncle Brian and Aunt Jen for coming to help paint Baby Akins' nursery and a big THANK YOU to "Dad of the Year" for doing quite a few coats on Sam's room and the furniture. Apparently, pregnancy has made me a bit color blind :)
Brian and Jen have been so wonderful spending lots of time and energy over at the Akins' household! Brian is Sam's new best friend (he pretends to talk to him lots on his "cell" phone during the day) and Jen has done so much for us...from painting to recovering my old rocking chair. We are so thankful Sam has such a great aunt and uncle!
The rooms are coming along...still a few things to do, but I am feeling much more prepared to have this baby!
Still feeling great and had an excellent check-up yesterday. Just a few more weeks until we get to meet this little guy!
32 weeks...Jon bought me this shirt in Branson and it's one of my favs

Jon holding up how many coats he has put on the room and furniture...isn't he the greatest husband ever!!! :)

Updates

Sam's big boy room is coming along nicely! Daddy spent the whole weekend working on it while Mommy and Sam stayed with Grammie and Pappy. We are so thankful for him! I can't wait to post pics of what Jon did...he built awesome trim and refinished my old furniture to match the "theme" of the room. Only two more rooms to go and I will feel better about this baby coming!

Sam's 18 month check-up:

Weight: 29 pounds
Height: 34 1/2 inches
They are guessing Sam will be about 6'3...Jon was hoping he would be taller, but I think he forgot about the Johnston side. Anything over 5'5 is considered tall for us!
Developmentally, Sam is off the charts! It's so fun to have "little" conversations with him and watch him explore.
He does enjoy the babbling still, which is very entertaining to watch and listen to.
Sam has also become quite the wrestler. I'm still trying to figure out how to teach him that we can wrestle with Dad, but can't tackle anything that moves.

Baby Update:

I am feeling great and enjoying being active again and chasing Sam everywhere! I will have to have tests done the week after I have the baby on my kidneys, but we are really just praying that everything will be great! The baby is so much more active than Sam was...which makes me a little scared :) They think he is around 3 pounds now. My belly is measuring 2 weeks ahead (bigger), but they said that was good.
We have also scheduled our C-section for December 16th. It really set in today and made everything seem more real for Jon and I. I'm looking forward to not feeling a contraction this time...watch me go early and eat my words!

Pumpkin Patch

This weekend Jon and I had so much fun hanging out in Liberty and spending time with Sam. I was just thrilled to be up, walking, and going places! On Saturday we took him to the Liberty parade and he loved it! KC Wolf got a little too close, but other than that he enjoyed dancing to the music and waving to all the girls that walked by!
Sunday we went to the pumpkin patch with Max and his parents. We were joking how last year we had to put pumpkins behind their backs for pictures and this year they wouldn't stand still long enough for us to even take a picture. We saw lots of fun animals and went on a little train ride.
Here are a few pics of our family fun!

Baby Akins

I really have no excuse for not blogging sooner...I have been on bed rest for almost 3weeks now, but am hoping to be off soon. Here is a recap of the joys of pregnancy :)

On Sept. 6th I started having severe back pain and went to the ER twice only to have them dismiss me and say it was overexertion. On Sunday afternoon I was throwing up from the pain and was only able to crawl places so we went back to the ER. They did an ultrasound on my kidneys and it appears I have severe hydroneuphrosis. My right kidney wasn't functioning and severely enlarged. They had to do surgery on Tuesday and found a kidney stone that could be the cause of all my pain and put a stent in from my kidney to my bladder for two weeks to hopefully get rid of any other stones I might have. The only downfall is that after the stent is removed it will be a waiting game to see if the pain comes back because they aren't able to do any testing on me since I'm pregnant. I get the stent out on Wednesday afternoon and it apparently isn't a complicated procedure, just "uncomfortable". It has been pretty painful and I have been taking medications that seem to help some and give me relief and some sleep. We are really just praying that when it comes out I will be fine...that really could happen too! I will probably still have to take it easy with the rest of this pregnancy. We don't think it's pregnancy related...just a really bad coincidence. Right now the baby is doing great, the doctors are just worried about my kidney function. We are just praying for total healing right now!

Jon and I have been overwhelmed with the amount of support from all of our family, friends, and neighbors. We are so thankful for all the phone calls, cards, flowers, and meals! Jon said this has been the best thing to happen to his tummy...he's so sensitive :)

We will continue to keep everyone updated and we would appreciate prayers for this Wednesday and that I will feel like a whole new woman after the stent is taken out!

Sleepy Sam

Just wanted to post this as a reminder to me if someday I decide to print off all of my blog enteries :)
Sam has been a sleeping machine lately. He rarely takes great naps and yesterday he slept until 11 and took a two hour nap. He went to bed at 9 too! I just felt I needed to post this so I would remember what a fun morning it was to sleep in with Sam!
P.S. I did take him to the doctor today just to be sure and he is healthy!

Labor Day Fun

It has been great having Jon around so much lately. Sam has definitely become Daddy's Little Boy this last week! Everything in the house is "Dada's shoes, Dada's hat, Dada's ball" it has been so much fun watching them really become such great buddies! I think he will be lost tomorrow when Jon has to go back to work.
We spent our final day playing in the sprinkler after a long morning of shopping for plants with Mom and Dad. Yep...we let him play in his diaper too...

We invited my parents over for a BBQ/cleaning party. My mom helped deep clean my house and my dad is a master on the vacuum so it worked out really well for me!!!
Thanks again for all your help...Jon and I couldn't do it without you!

More Golfing Pics

This is my favorite face Sam makes now.

So Sam knows that he can't go in the street. He has decided to compromise by standing at the end of the driveway and throw things in the street. He knows he's not supposed to do that. Here he is after committing the offense...

...and here he is fleeing the scene.
